The 2009 Calendar theme was "Delightful Lanna" comprising the eight northern (and some rarely-visited) provinces of: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phayao & Phrae

"Combining the goodwill of the travel industry -
- Those who arrange travel; those who enjoy travelling, and those who benefit from travellers"

2009 - the Chiang Mai Charity Calendar was now in its second year; independent, self-financed by the organisers Ramlah M. Jafri and Basil McCall. It again had no sponsors, and carried no advertising (for the first 2008 calendar history please click here) Artworks were once more provided free by City Life Magazine, and the calendar was printed at cost by Chotana Print Company, Chiang Mai.

It sold for Baht 100.- per calendar (approx US$3 or Euros 2) including a custom-made envelope for easy postage. The entire proceeds of sales were donated to charities for children, and no profit was taken by any party. As far as we know, it remained the only one of its kind in the world.

The 2009 edition carried colourful images of "Lanna" chosen by judges from 100 paintings voluntarily submitted by school students in Chiang Mai and Lampang who embraced the ideal of 'Children helping Children' A list of the participating schools and educational institutions (without whom there would be no calendar) is listed here.

The organisers shared their continuing desire to help disadvantaged children in the north of Thailand through the goodwill of the travel industry; from those who arrange travel, from those who enjoy travelling, and from the many companies and local businesses that benefit directly from visitor arrivals.

Using descriptive text and photography plus the paintings, the calendar highlighted aspects which add to the pleasure of visiting Northern Thailand - Delightful Lanna - thereby encouraging more tourists to come, and to stay longer. The calendars found their way into homes and offices in countries all over the world, and created sustained awareness of the destination in an unusual and charming way.

Hotels, travel agencies, local companies, restaurants, hospitals, clubs and associations were able to have the calendar personalised with message, logo, group photograph, etc., either with a built-in custom-made front cover, or on both sides with an extended 1-inch calendar base which remains visible whichever page of the calendar is open.
By offering the calendar to their customers, companies joined a valuable promotion for Thailand, and contributed directly to the welfare of disadvantaged rural children - who receive very few, or no benefits from tourism at all.

For tourists or residents, the calendar made an ideal an unusual gift for relatives & friends - a change from greetings cards, which are usually thrown away when the season is over.
